Jacob Mauk and his wife, Susannah Walters (or Walter), were born and raised in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They married there and most of their children were born there. They moved to Jefferson County, Pennsylvania sometime between 1830 and 1840.
There are different hypotheses regarding who Jacob’s parents were but it is generally believed his family originated in Germany and lived in Maryland before moving to Bedford County. One of the goals of the Mauk DNA Project is to establish who Jacob’s parents were.
Susannah’s father, Henry Walter, and paternal grandparents, Mathias Walter & Barbara Imler, are known and autosomal DNA evidence supports this. It is believed this family also originated in Germany.
